COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENSION WORKER

COMMUNITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The department became fully functional in the year 2015 and was fully accredited by the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN). The board also approved the following courses for the department and number of students that must be admitted per each academic session:
A) COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENSION WORKERS (CHEW) 75 students
B) RETURN COMMUNITY HEALTH EXTENSION WORKERS 30 students
C) JUNIOR CHEW 50 students

GENERAL GOAL

To produce Community Health Workers with appropriate and adequate knowledge, skills, and attitudes for effective delivery of health care services at the primary health care level.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

At the end of the training programme, the student should be able to perform the community based functions as well as clinic based functions of primary health care.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

a) Holder of WASCE, SSCE, NECO, or GCE O’level with 5 credits at not more than one sittings which must include: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
b) Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEW) with 2 years post qualification experience in addition to the requirement mentioned above. The applicant must be registered with the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN) and possess a valid practice license.
c) A candidate must credit in English, Mathematics, and Biology and also two (2) other subjects in WASCE/GCE or NECO, at not more than two sittings.

DURATION OF COURSES

1) CHEW: The duration is three (3) calendar years (i.e. six semesters). It comprises of classroom work and practical placement.
2) Return-CHEW: It is two (2) calendar years (i.e. four semesters). It includes both the classroom work and practical placement.
3) JCHEW: It is two (2) calendar years (i.e. four semesters). It comprises of classroom work and practical placement.
